In the process of recording old lutesongs translated through the years, searching through music sheets, old tapes and winchesters, we found some old recordings that survived somehow the decades. Friend Tamás Koós (birthday song) convinced me to share some of them. I opted for youtube and he for maybe making videos to them.

Pilgrim, Domján GáborTramp on the street, Domján GáborFor example here are the spirituals Pilgrim of Sorrow and Hollowed Be Thy Name translated and recorded 20-30 years ago, or the song Tramp on the street I translated at the age of twenty-few, plus the English ballad Geordie found recently (2020) on a pendrive all of which I heard from Joan Baez for the first time in the early seventies.

Also, here is a nuptial song wrote many years ago and played nowadays: The Great Mystery. Another project: a poem by Attila József set to music. See notes and translation below the video.

And also, here is a non-translated arrangement of the song Paint it black by the Rolling Stones. This recording has its own story. At the death of ’Gyuri bácsi’ (uncle George), his son, my son in law, asked me to play it during the funeral. The Rolling Stones, and specially this song, were his favourites. Still in the communist era he managed to go to Wien with his son to see a concert of them. Holding a guitar in hand was I shouting into a mike by the bank of the Danube while family members were pouring the ashes into the river then people were throwing red and white flowers against the heavy wind. And the wide river was rolling on, dirty and bright, dead flowers floating away with the waves silently.

You can hear the sound of this lute here:

The video was taken only a few minutes after the just finished instrument was stringed for the first time. (New strings are still prone to get out of tune easily, this explains some of the courses being not quite well tuned at this very first try of the instrument.)

Quotes from letters of the new owner for reference:

‘I was sold on it just by its looks. Now that I ogle it up close, well, i’m really, really satisfied. It’s as beautiful as any on the ‘net. And it isn’t 2 meters long as some of the extended dual pegboard baroque archlutes tend to be. It actually looks like a lute on steroids, or rather something of a hotrod. Given what it is, a lute and a musical instrument, with that gorgeous rosette (Tihamer is goooood with wood) and archlute soundboard, it’s eyecatching and gorgeous… Anyway, the craftsmanship speaks for itself… as I said, the construction of the body, neck, pegboards and soundboard are just divine: easy tuning and fine projection. So don’t be shy quoting me. And certainly you can use my name…’
